A steel frame with an engineered insulated cavity outperforms uninsulated blockwork significantly on thermal transfer.
Why light gauge steel
What it is
Light gauge steel — also called cold-formed steel, LGS, LGSF or CFS — is structural framing made by cold-forming galvanised steel coil into precise profiles. Unlike hot-rolled structural steel, which is formed at high temperature into heavy sections, light gauge steel is formed cold from thin coil, typically between 0.55 mm and 1.2 mm thick.
The result is a framing system with an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, manufactured to tolerances measured in millimetres.
Compared with blockwork
| Light gauge steel | Blockwork | |
|---|---|---|
| Programme | Days to erect | Weeks, plus curing |
| Weather dependency | None | Significant |
| Wet trades on site | None | Extensive |
| Dimensional accuracy | ± millimetres | ± centimetres |
| Structure weight | Light | Heavy |
| Foundation requirement | Reduced | Substantial |
| Thermal performance | Engineered cavity | Depends on block |
| Modification later | Straightforward | Demolition required |
| Recyclability | 100% | Limited |
Where it performs best in the UAE
A steel frame with an engineered insulated cavity outperforms uninsulated blockwork significantly on thermal transfer.
No curing period means no delay between structure and finishing.
Galvanised coating resists the coastal and desert conditions that degrade untreated steel.
Fewer workers on site for less time, which matters in a market where site labour is the constraint.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. With correct galvanising specification and detailing, a light gauge steel structure has a design life comparable to conventional construction. It is a permanent building method, not a temporary one.
The steel is galvanised — zinc-coated — before forming. We specify Z275 coating, and our recent mill certificates record 277 to 284 GSM against that 275 requirement. Rust risk arises from cut edges and poor detailing, both of which are controlled in factory fabrication.
Up to two storeys in light gauge steel alone. Beyond that, or where clear spans are required, we fabricate a hot-rolled structural steel primary frame and infill it with light gauge framing.
Steel does not burn and does not contribute fuel to a fire. The fire rating of the overall wall assembly depends on the boarding and insulation specified.
Yes. Fixing into steel studs is straightforward with the correct fasteners, and stud positions are recorded on the panel drawings.
Material cost is comparable. Total project cost is usually lower once reduced programme, reduced site labour and lighter foundations are accounted for.
0.55 mm to 1.2 mm depending on the structural application. All to G550 grade with Z275 galvanised coating.
Our retained structural consultant reviews and stamps the calculations on every project before fabrication begins.
